A new race

Since I biked a bijillion miles on Sunday, I took Monday off. So I'm running this week on Tuesday Thursday. Did both of them just fine.

3.1 miles on Tuesday. I left late so instead of walking to my normal start and running on the bike path, I just headed from the front of my building and ran. Soon though I ran out of sidewalk though. I tried to rough it on the grass along Sycamore Rd/Rt. 23 but ankle kept turning. So I made my way over to the mobile home neighbourhood that sits behind my apartment complex. Ran up and down every street and managed to squeak out 3.1 miles with running back. I did find out where the Director of my work's wellness center (aka gym) lives. I ran past his car parked in his driveway (his license plate is his last name).

Later on that day, I did go down to the Wellness Center and sign up for a year membership. It's uber cheap, 1 year is equal to 2 months at my YMCA. So now if I ever feel the need to get a run in or lift some weights during lunch or after work, I can! Just need to bring in a towel, shampoo, body wash and a couple running outfits and I'll be set! Sweet! I used to do that at the paper I worked at (nice bike path right near the building) but alas, no showers and no real changing room. This is completely different!

Then today, I ran again. I went to bed really late and didn't know if I could get up at 6 am. I did though. Again was out the door right at 6:30 am so I ran from there. I started the same direction as Tuesday, only ran south and picked up my normal running path, not soon after. Managed to get in 3.5 miles this morning.

I like consistency. I like knowing where I'm going. I like knowing the known. I like seeing a landmark and that is a mile marker for me. I will however, always try new things just to push myself outside of my comfort zone. It's not always easy for me but I try. So these two new routes were new for me. I attempted and I did it but once I was on my normal path today, I felt more relaxed.

So since I've been marathon training, I haven't signed up for any races. Maybe because it's summer? Or just haven't seen any that I really wanted to do. My last race was a 10k, weekend after Memorial Day. Marathon training started middle of June for me. BUT all that will change this weekend! I heard about this race last year but I couldn't run it and I was extremely disappointed. But not this YEAR! I will even postpone my 12 mile run from Saturday to Sunday so I can do this race. OK, so since I built it up so much, I know you all are just dying to know.

It's the Belvidere Historic Home Fun Run/Walk. It is a 5k, shirts guaranteed for first 200 people (really small!) but I didn't hear anything about prizes or age categories but that's not the point. The point is that it starts 2 blocks away from my childhood home. The point is when I emailed the director of the race, the course will run by my childhood home. The point is that I'm going to get so excited when I run past it!

They will have info of the houses that we will run by and even go by one on the Underground Railroad. Now supposedly, my next door neighbour said that his house was one of the stops. So I'll find out if they are talking about it or another one along Kishwaukee River. It'll be interesting to know if my house is talked about. I doubt it, nothing really important happened there or really cool people lived there. I do know that my parents were only the 2nd owners and that it was built in 1895. This house, *sigh* so gorgeous! 2 floors, an attic, a basement, 4 bedrooms, 1.5 baths (iron clawfoot tub), a front parlor room, servants staircase, servants house (which we turned into a garage) a 2 floor barn with horse stalls, all sitting on an acre of land with the Kishwaukee River at the edge. It's up for sale now; has been for 3 years now. Asking price $445,000. This was when I grabbed a sheet in 2006. I bet they lowered it now. I stopped there in 2002 and they invited me in to see the changes they made. Broke my heart. But the big thing was I asked them about the bats. We used to get bats that would come down and fly around the rooms. When I asked about them, they had a run-in with them the night before. They won't leave! Haha!

This will be the first race that I've signed up for on the morning of the race. Never done that before. But shouldn't be a big deal. May miss out on the shirt. Oooh, I should wear my "Save the Planet, Recycle an Old House" shirt (has a bunch of them from Belvidere's Historic Society). I just can't tell you how excited I am about this!! How dorky is that?
