Running is my boyfriend

OMG. How long have I been saying the above phrase? For a long ass time now. It's even a label in this very blog. I now can own a shirt with that phrase on it.

Screw Luke. He can be my second boyfriend, running will be my one and true love. That will never leave me. That I can always turn to in times of need. That will help me get all sweaty and make me feel good about my body.

Now... how many types of shirts do I buy?? :-)

Catching up

I have been neglecting this blog. Actually, I've been neglecting my personal one as well. I haven't written much here because I haven't been running. I decided to take 2 weeks off from no running at all. Gotta give time for this IT band to heal and heal properly. I am no longer limping but there are times when I still feel pain, really more like a dull ache on the outside of my right knee. And it kinda hard to lay on my stomach and have my heel touch my butt, I can feel the knee tight then. Ryan Hall gave himself 2 weeks rest, so I figured if it's good enough for an elite, it's good enough for me! :-D

In other news, my right big toenail, the one that I also bruised in my 1st half marathon of St. Jude, is really bruised this time around! And no, I don't have ill fitting shoes. I never had a problem the entire training time. It's because of the hills. Below is a lovely picture of it. It's not as bad as it could be. I've seen black toenails before. At least I have a good part on the outside of the nailbed. So I don't think I'll lose it. It'll just come loose and be sore to the touch for a while. It'll take a good year to finally grow that out I bet!

Now comes biking season. I finally have my entire road bike decked out. I have clipless pedals (even though they're mountain bike pedals) and finally bought shoes for it yesterday. I had to get them ordered though. I went to 2 different stores and finally the second one had several sizes that I could at least try on. They both wanted me to fit in a mens orginally. I kept telling them, no, it's gonna be too wide. Sure enough! One was too wide in the forefoot and the other pair in the heel. But eventually we found a brand and tried on size 43 and it fit. But I didn't like that model so I went with another model. One that would let me walk better since the cleats are recessed into the sole of the shoe. It's heavier but I can always buy another road pair later on if I need to.

Just tonight, I finally rode my bike for a decent amount of time. More than I did last time. 6.3 miles to be exact. I need to remember even on easy rides to NOT WEAR COTTON!!!!! But man, I forgot how good it felt to sweat! No knee pain, no thigh pain. Though I did only go 6 miles. But the good news is that I could feel my thighs working. And more good news, I averaged around 13 miles per hour for the whole trip. But while pedaling around 15-16. I couldn't do that with my mountain bike unless I was going downhill! This is going to be sweet!

I contacted Garmin about Phil, my 405. I looked on their website and it says that it's waterproof. Which says to me, that I can take it out in the rain just don't swim with it. So it should stand up to a little rain. Still to be safe I decided not to tell them about it (my luck they'll find this blog now). They wrote back to me telling me how to do a soft reset and a master reset if the soft reset doesn't work. Both didn't do a damn thing. The digital readout should fade and then restart. Well, they faded but that's it. And in order to get it back to normal, I have to plug it in and let it "charge" which really does nothing too. So I faxed them a copy of the receipt and they'll send me an RMA so I can send it back. This greatly disappoints me because....

...Next week I plan on going to Hilton Head, SC for a vacation with my brother. This is going to be great! Normally I'm not a warm weather person so it'll be interesting. Sunny and low 80's all week. But I also plan on starting to run again that week. I wanted to use my Phil to help me keep track of my miles but I guess I'll just go by time and estimate that I run at 9:30 min/mi for 30 minutes and 10 min/mi for anything longer than that. I know that's really stretching it and my times are faster than that but I'll play it safe. and I must remember to get up early to run before we do stuff that day.

I think I also have something wrong with me mind. When I go on a vacation, I want to do everything I can possibly do. Horseback riding, swimming with dolphins, hiking, parasailing, tennis, hitting golf balls, shopping, etc. But John mentioned that since this is a vacation he wants a few days to just kick back and read a couple books by the pool. That's gonna be hard for me but I'm gonna need to do it too. I think I have just way too much energy. Like I imagine a vacation in Colorado will be me outside moving THE ENTIRE TIME. Winter, Fall, Spring or Summer! I hope I can find a guy that will keep up with me!

Speaking of guys, there's something new in that department too but it's not going to spring into anything. He's not into the sports/active thing. But because I miss companionship & flirting with a male counterpart, I'm hanging on. My heart is just not that into it. Everything will be compared to my previous relationship, I'm afraid. Someone who had the EXACT SAME MTN BIKE as me. How's that for a sign?

Running is my boyfriend

A few years back, there was an image I saw on the interwebs that said "Music is my boyfriend." Back in 2006/2007, I changed that to "Running is my boyfriend" and it became my mantra. Well, I'm back to repeating it again as I have lost the latter. Or maybe not Running but more like "Gym (aka Jim) is my boyfriend" as I plan on spending a lot of time there.

Since I have signed up for an April (hilly) marathon, I have decided to use this opportunity to get into the best damn shape of my life (besides just running).

Running 3 days a week; Monday, Wednesday & long run Saturday. I'm gonna loosely follow Runner's World running guide. But @keeponrunning suggested that since I'm already in shape from marathon training, I should just do 10-13 mile weekly long run, throw in a 15 miler and then and 3 weeks before a marathon do an 18-20 miler and then a taper. Sounds like a plan to me. I will probably follow the Runner's World training plan for during the week.

YMCA Classes. I found a ton of free classes that I am dying to take. Unfortunately, a lot of them are late at night which means I won't get home until well after 7pm. So we'll see how much I stick with it but I'm gonna try!
Monday: Pilates & Stretch 6:30-7:20p. I really want to take this one, I think the stretching will help me out loads. However it's at 6:30p. I did running tonight and then a circuit training loop and still got done at 5:45p. So I might also take the Toning class immediately before that one 6-6:30p.
Tuesday: Get on the Ball 6:15-6:45p. I hope this is an ab workout with the big huge ball. I love those!!
Tuesday/Thursday: Step & Strengthen 4:30-5:40p. I'm not really sure what this is about but it sounds good and I could use the step to get my thighs and ankles in shape. I know it's not Aerobics as they already have a class for that. This class is right at 4:30p so I'll have to hustle to get over to the Y on those days.
Wednesday: Toning 6-6:30p. Depending on the quality of the class I just may take both nights!
Thursday: Cardio Cycling (aka Spinning) 6:55-7:40p. Wow, it is QUITE the workout and it will KICK your BUTT. I even sweat on the back of my hands. LOVE IT!

Tonight I went running at the Y. I couldn't find a spot in the parking lot and it was nearly 4:30p. I thought I would be safe getting there before 5p! I then walked in and immediately checked out the treadmills. It was all full. Luckily, the lady behind the counter said I could sign up early so I signed up for an empty 4:45p slot and then got changed in the locker room. I could only sign up for 30 minutes at a time so I had to book it. I got 3.27 miles in 30 minutes. The person in front of me left early so I actually got on the treadmill with time to spare so I used that extra time for a quick walk cool down. Then I did the weight training express circuit. It works all the right muscles and since it's express you can only do one set at a time so you're never waiting too long or interrupting someone's workout.

As much as I love winter, I'm really not liking this below freezing weather we've had lately. I don't think I can run outside with it being that cold. So I have to do my runs inside. Unfortunately, since it's after New Years when all the New Years Resolutions people have come out in droves. So they take up all the treadmills. I can't wait until Feb/March when they realise that they fail and go home & give up. Then real dedicated people like me, can have their machines back. Harsh maybe but it's the truth. I can't stand the gym in January. Also, they don't turn on the AC either. I have never sweated so much running a measly 3 miles before but only in the summer! It was really hard to breathe too. But I'm gonna stick with the Y during the week and hopefully suck it up for my long runs on Saturdays.

starting all over

I'm up to 4 miles now. I was supposed to run 8 today but I am definitely not up to 8 continuous miles. The past 2 times I ran, I did the 4 miles. But I did them at a slow pace, 10 min/mi. I figured that training at a faster speed last year may have been the reason for my sore knees. So I'm going to slow it down. Maybe I can run 8 miles at that pace but I don't know. Then once I get outside, I won't have a choice but to go normal pace. I cannot for the life of me go slow outside, I can't control my own speed too well.

There's this online store called OneMoreMile.net and they had a slogan contest. It's where I got my shirt that says "13.1 miles. Been there, done that." and undies that say "Sorry, I have to go running." I submitted the slogan "Running is my boyfriend." I want a shirt that says that!!

I'm not doing the indoor triathlon after all. I waited until pay day to sign up but I forgot to that last Friday and the deadline was Superbowl Sunday and I was in Chicago all weekend. But Brent's doing it so I'll be there to support him and then to revive him.

I get to go to Iowa in two weeks! Yay for racing season!
