You know that you're becoming a more mature, experienced runner when you leave the headphones at home for runs. When you don't feel like you need the "thump thump thump" of the beat to help with pace. When you'd rather hear your breathing and foot falls than somebody rhyming words. When you feel confident enough that you will overcome any negative thoughts on long runs or in races. When you don't need music to zone out and distract those thoughts from happening in the first place.
I have completed 2 marathons without music, many 5ks and countless runs outside without the earbuds. The only time I wear them now is on the treadmill. After all, it's a mouse wheel for runners.
Try it for a month, you won't even miss the noise in your ears.

I do my training runs exclusively with music, but I do enjoy turning it off and listen to my feet hit the ground... breathing... helps to bring the focus in. I don't listen to music at all during races because I really enjoy the crowd noise.
