Heat Wave

My 8 mile run was great this morning! I had a bagel before I left. Yay food!! Good weather, good company and the pace was not so bad after all! Average pace of 9:55 min/mi. You'll see in my stats that the pace kept going downhill but I knew I couldn't keep that fast of a pace. And then when we started going west, where the 20 mph winds were coming from, that slowed me down a whole lot, especially near the end when I was tired and

I wore my Under Amour tights and my new Hind Pants and that worked out great!! I wore my ColdGear Under Armour shirt, with my new Hind Shirt over that. I also threw on my softshell jacket but even before the 2 mile mark, I had it off. Luckily, I wore my water bottle belt so that held it up around my waist. But it did keep me from easily reaching my Gatorade. I had a feeling that I shouldn't have worn the jacket but when I saw Joe with one on, I figured I better put mine on as well. I took off my gloves around the 1 mile mark. No pins & needles today for my fingers!! I had on my visor thankfully since the sun was bright and I also had on my sunglasses. Only wore a fleece headband, no full on hat. Apparently the 40's are a good number for me to run in!

Tonight I hope to run another 5-6 miles on the treadmill at the YMCA. Let's hope for that. I'll go an hour before they close. This way hopefully I can stay on the treadmill for an entire hour and get that in. Then I would have ran 13-14 miles and while it's not the best to do for marathon training but no way could I have done a whole 14 miles in one outing today. I'm not that trained yet. Hoping to get up to 9 next week in one run!

My cats are loving this warm weather finally. They are out on the balcony since the majority of the snow has finally melted away last night. Seriously, before I went to bed the snow was from front to back. This morning, it was just on the front. One of my cats is getting a little jumpy because of the wind but it's keeping her excited and on her toes.

ANGER!!!

Can I have a redo on this day?

First, I get up around 7:30a and dressed for a treadmill run at the YMCA. Shorts, tank, new shoes, heart rate, jogging pants, zip up fleece, and my jacket. Leave around 8:10a and I go outside to drive across the street to the Y. Yes, I live within in a 6 minute walk to the Y but when it's -2 outside, I'd rather not. And I'm glad I did for as soon as I went outside the first breath I took hurt my lungs and my nose hairs froze. But I get to my car. And it doesn't start. *sigh* Not again. It happened last week and weekend when the first deep freeze came on through.

So instead of just giving up, I go back upstairs to put on another pair of shoes, grab my fleece headband and neck gaiter and decide to trek my way across to the YMCA. I finally make it over there and walk to the Workout Center. I tell the guy my situation and it looks like the treadmills are not that busy about 6 are free. He says that's fine, it shouldn't be a problem. So I pick one out, still sign up for the 30 minute but he knows that I want to go for longer. I take off my pants, change out my shoes (I didn't want to walk through any snow with my new shoes) and I finally get going around 9a. But I was frozen to the core.

It starts filling up around that time too. I worry a little but since I know that I have my treadmill until 9:30a no biggie. I finally get in the zone in the last few minutes of that 30 minutes. I notice this kid jumps on the treadmill next to me. His friend is waiting behind him. I don't really give it too much thought though. Then this YMCA lady Nazi comes over to me saying that someone signed up for this treadmill after me. I tell her (mind you while still running) that can't they run on one of the other 5 treadmills open? She said his friend running on that one (points to the one where the kid running) and he signed up for this one. I told her that I'm in the middle of my long run and I cleared it with the guy behind the desk. She said that "today is his first day and he didn't understand the way the sign up worked. You can only sign up for 30 minutes." I asked "can't he use the open one on the other side?" She said "no, he wants this one and your time is up. You can get off and use another treadmill and sign up for another 30 minutes."

Mind you, I'm really really angry at this time. I just finally got in the zone, comfortable with doing 6 miles on a treadmill and then this happens. So I stop the treadmill and start to grab my items and the lady comes back to me saying that the treadmill on the other side is open and he said he can run on that. I just looked at her and said "I just stopped my treadmill, I can't get those miles back now!" She said Thank you. And I just wanted to scream!!!!! I go over to the sign up sheet, pick another treadmill and sign up for 30 minutes.

I go over to pick up my items and saw the kid was already setting up his speed. I asked if he saw the mileage on it. He stuttered and said "Um, no, no." Grrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!! I think it was 32 minutes and I was running at 9:40 min/mi so I can figure it out on Runner's World. (32:34 min @ 9:40 min/mi = 3.37 mi)

I got to my treadmill but I already lost my rhythm. It's the first row so there's that. This treadmill seems lower or I seem higher above it. Then it's crooked so I wasn't lined up with the folks in front of me and it totally threw off my kilter. I just wasn't feeling it anymore. I was still fine till about the last few minutes then my heart rate started to sky rocket. I knew that was because my body started to not like this distance. So at 30 minutes, I stopped which was 3.11 miles.

Total of 6.48 miles for the day. I think. I have no idea since my run got interrupted! I was not about to go outside and run at a -2. I pushed my heart rate monitor up too high thinking that it was falling and it needed to be higher on my chest so at one point the number was really low. Then I lowered it when I saw the 60's and I pushed it down a bit and it started going right up! I was keeping around the 170's except at the end when it went to the 180's.

But I think next week, if this keeps up, I'm gonna to go over earlier. It was easy to get out of bed when I knew that people were waiting. But when I know that I'm going to do a treadmill run and it would be there all day, I had no rush to get out of bed. Stupid mind.

And if this weather keeps up, I'm gonna have either a personal worst in the marathon run OR go from the marathon to just the half marathon. I'm never doing a Spring marathon again. Have I said that before? :-)

Ohhh and I also found out why my Garmin is not telling me my calorie count when using the heart rate. It's because Garmin does their calorie count by speed and/or elevation and not by heart rate. This is the web page that I read told me this. Makes sense now.

Now since I didn't eat anything this morning before my run, I'm going to eat a bagel and take a shower and then just chill out in my apartment all day long. Maybe tomorrow my car will start. I want Pie!!

Oh but my shoes were good! The red part of the bottom makes it really smushy and soft. So I liked that. However, I think I put on my left shoe wrong because my toes kept going to sleep on me. So I have to adjust the shoe laces. But otherwise, I like them. We'll see how it goes once I get in the double digits. Whenever that might happen.

Really? 28 miles per hour, really?

So at the NITRO meeting last week, I heard my very mention of the "Super Treadmill." If you thought your local gym's treadmill was bad, wait until you get a load of this one. It goes up to 28 mph (for those jackrabbits out there) and has an incline of 40% degree and a decline of 10%. Um yea, you won't be catching me on one of those babies! I can barely make it to 7 mph on most days!

I had a dream about treadmills last night. I haven't ran since Wednesday. I could go to the Y today but well, it's cold out there. But I've been seriously thinking of getting a treadmill. This way I could still do my long runs (6+ miles). But I'm on the second floor. I'm not sure how my neighbours downstairs would feel about that. Also, I don't really have a room to put it in. My living room is too small for it. I have a bed & small computer desk in my But I was thinking that if I get rid of my dining room table (not that ever use it but for twice a year or something), I could put in there and then I could still watch TV a bit.

There's a local athletic gym that is moving and getting new treadmills. At the gym, (where our running group meets), the owner said that he plans on marking his treadmills for sale. It would be awesome to get one, even if it is a used one, for a good price. I would still have to think of a place for it here and get transportation to move it to my apartment and then up to my second floor apartment but I could figure it out somehow.

This damn weather is getting me so down, though. It's not so much the snow but the cold that I can't handle. It's 11 degrees now and feels like -2. Um yea, I can't run outside in that. And walking over to the Y would be difficult. My car wouldn't start yesterday. I haven't tried today yet. I'm hoping it will get a little warmer yet before I try.

I just hope that it warms up to the 20's with no wind chill soon. Then I can run outside.

Friday, January 9, 2009

There's a group meeting at 7am Saturday morning at a local park to do a long run. It's better than the 5am that another group meets at many weekends.

However, it's cold outside. I'm not talking 40's & 50's that you southern people have to deal with. I'm talking 23* with a feel of 11* for 7am on Saturday. Winds are at 14 mph. It's also gonna snow up to 4" until 6am.

But I'm desperate to do a long run. I need to get out there. I know that 11 miles on a YMCA treadmill is NOT in my future. BUUUUT, I have never ran in this type of weather before. Sure other people run in worse weather than this but I haven't.

How will I even know how to dress? I realise layers are the key but what if it's still not enough? 2 socks? 2 gloves?

And water. How do I carry water with me if it freezes at first contact of outside? I guess if worse comes to worse, I could just eat snow. As long as it's now yellow snow.

Footing. I just got the YakTrax so I shouldn't be too worried about footing but with the 4" of snow we're supposed to get up until 6am, I don't know if anything will be plowed to run on.

Plus, the worse part. How will I be able to get up that early on a freezing Saturday morning? How will I urge myself to get out from under my heater blanket at 6am??

Oh and I'm going out to a bar tonight to see friends that I haven't seen in a very long time. I only plan on having a beer or two but it's not that that I'm worried about. I'm worried about energy supply; being tired and the like. I don't want to leave them early but if I'm serious about this April marathon, I have GOT to get on schedule and do this! I just hope they'll understand if I leave at midnight or earlier to get at least 6 hours of sleep.

Tis the Season

The past 2 weeks have been insane with the weather in northern Illinois. Either windy & cold (like double digits below zero wind chill!) or snowing like there's no tomorrow. So I haven't been running as much as I should. Even though I have a YMCA membership and it's a 5 minute walk from my place. To come home, change in my cold apartment and then back out in the cold to drive (yes when it's below 32, I will drive across the street) to the Y, run and then get all hot & sweaty only to come back out in the cold and to my cold car to drive back home doesn't sound like a fun time to me. So I haven't been running.

BUUUUT!!! I did bring down my running stuff this week. I'll be in St. Louis tonight & tomorrow, southern Illinois tomorrow to Sunday night and then St. Louis from Monday to Saturday. I hope to run a few times in those days. YMCA is available here in St. Louis. There's a treadmill available at both of my brother's and of course there's outside. The weather should be more tolerable in southern Illinois than in northern Illinois. I brought all my outdoor running clothes so I'm actually looking forward to it!

I even got a new water bottle holder back pack from St. Jude Heroes that I'm DYING to try out! Which is only good for me on a long long run so a long run I will do! YAY!!

The weather matters

18 miles in 3:04:25 (avg pace 10:15 min/mi). Problem is, that's not how long I was out on the path for. It was probably closer to 3:30 or so. Knowing I started sometime after 9a and ended at 1:00p doesn't help.

I looked at the weather this morning and everything looked fine.

I decided to go with my UnderArmor Cold Gear wear (not my Hot Gear). So I had on my tights, and my turtleneck shirt. I also wore my fleece hat to keep my head and ears warm instead of my visor because it's so overcast I won't need it. Last minute I decided to bring my Target Champion running jacket to wear until I got up to the path. I'm glad I did for I wore it on the run as well. It was a bit cumbersome to wear it over my hydration belt but it had to be done. Around mile 2 I regretted bringing it, around mile 10, I was glad I did. It was snowing for the first half of the run.

Problem was that I didn't look at the wind factor on the far right. I only paid attention to the temperature. I got out there and I could feel the wind. Hmm, OK, well, it seems to be coming from the west and it'll die down as the day goes on. 9 miles out there. Turned around, BAM, a force of wind totally knocked me back. Uh-oh. I'm 9 miles from my car. I should NOT have done this.

I let this friend know every time I go for a run in case anything happens and I don't text him when I'm done, he knows something's up and to go contact someone. He said that if I ever get into trouble I could call him and he'll come pick me up. Problem is that now I want to rely on him all the time. Today was one of those days that I thought about it, I really did.

I carried on with my run though. By this time the ball of my foot was crying out. Unfortunately, this second half, I stopped a lot. I even walked a lot too. I tried walking instead of stopping but it still put pressure on my foot. So I stopped that and just went with stopping and rest my foot, not standing on it and then running agian. You'll be able to see all that once I upload the Garmin data with my other laptop which I'll be getting on Tuesday evening. Then once I got over like 13, I was running 1/2 mile and then stopping, then running 1/2 mile and then stopping. I tried changing up my stride, thinking that maybe something with the way I take off or land on my heel but nothing seemed to help. Maye by that time it was too late. The last .7 miles I did all in one take though. Whoo doggies.

The wind made me stop a few times. OK, a lot of times. When you're tired and weak any strength of wind will knock one over. At one point, around 3.5 miles LEFT, I had to bear down and force to go through it, it was very tough out there. I couldn't understand also how it was getting COLDER. It was supposed to warmer throughout the day. Again, if I would have seen it, the website would have told me why it was getting colder, the wind was picking up by about 5mph! Towards the beginning of the second half there wasn't that much trees surrounding the path so no protection from the wind. In the last mile left there is also this part that is wide open, no trees just little wild weeds. I had to barrel my way through that as well.

It was just downright cold out there all the time though. I could see my breath the entire way. In the second half, I put my gloves back on and had to curl up my hands inside my gloves around mile 14 because they were so cold. My nose ran like I was supposed to, all the time. My gloves & jacket sleeves are covered in snot now. My cheeks were frozen too. I should have brought a neck gaiter but I didn't think of the WIND. My eyes were bloodshot terribly when I ended, they were also very very dry. When I blinked in the second half, my vision looked funny.

Also, there was a problem with my left foot and that tendon. I managed to fix it by moving the tongue over to the side so that it wasn't on top of that tendon. But at one stopping point, I readjusted my shoelaces and it started to hurt again. So I adjusted it again but it still felt funny. I dealt with it.

This path that I run on for my long runs is a limestone path, not the greatest. I'm always getting tiny rocks in my shoes and when you're done with a few miles those tiny pebbles feel like boulders. Today was definitely no different since my left shoe was very loose at the top to let that tendon breathe. Plus, it's so out and back, 9 miles one way and 9 miles back the same way. So boring. Though I did see a squirrel carrying a tiny little ear of corn across the path and scampered away when I came by. When I came back, the ear of corn was still there, a few kernels missing. :-)

At one point, I started to break down and cry and scream at the wind "Why won't you go away!!!" I was so angry. I wasn't feeling bad in terms of energy or cramps. Just my feet and the wind was giving me a hard time. I had a Gel at mile 6 and another one after 12. Drank both with water and also in between those times had Gatorade. Grape Gatorade takes like Grape Kool-aid, I like it! This foot thing is starting to worry me though. I hope that the doctor can find something wrong with it and fix me. I don't look forward to running anymore.

20 miles is next weekend. I think I'm just going to do 5 miles out and 5 miles back, 5 miles out and 5 miles back. Just in case anything happens though I hope I won't be tempted to quit when I see my car. This will also help me with doing gel intake; a total of 3.

Now tonight for 6 hours I have to stand on my feet and volunteer at a fancy black tie dinner for the Foundation at the college. I have to wear nice black slacks and a white shirt. I will wear my trainers though. I will not wear any sort of heel. I don't care what they say. Why did I volunteer for this??

I also recommend not crying the night before a big run or the morning of either. It doesn't help with the energy and the disposition for the run.

Cold weather running

Who on Earth was that woman out running this evening? Cause it sure as hell wasn't me. I don't know what got into me. Maybe it was the garlic & cheese pizza bread Red Baron single that I had at 2:30p that helped me out!

I ran 9 miles tonight and it was no problem. Well, the last 2 was tough (I'll explain later). But my average pace tonight was 9:03 min/mi. Let me repeat, for 9 MILES! Sure I of course had my positive splits but for the first 5 miles I was under 9 minutes (fastest of mile 3 at 8:41)! With my slowest mile being of course my last and that was at 9:35! One of these days I'll go out there and do a 9:30 min/mi for my first mile. Geez, I wish I knew how to slow myself down!

The last 2 was tough because of three reasons. The bottoms of my feet were hurting, specifically the balls of my feet. After the run, I looked down and saw that my shoes weren't tied tightly so they could have been flopping about and my socks rubbing so that's what caused the rawness that my feet are now feeling. The second reason was my left hip flexor was giving me problems. I never had that happen to be before. About a year and a half ago it was my right hip flexor that I had physical therapy on. So that was a bit odd. Almost 2 hours after the run, I'm still having problems with left my leg at my hip, especially when walking up stairs. Third reason: it was cold!! Starting out it was 51 degrees according the bank but once that sun disappeared lower than the trees I could feel the effects of the cold on my face, specifically my face and upper thighs. I even put my gloves BACK on after taking them off around the 2.25 mile mark! I did see a guy near the end of my run in just short sleeves and shorts. CRAZY! The bank when I finished said it was 46 degrees. So it dropped 5 in the 1:21 I was out running. Hmm, may have to bring a neck gaiter next week.

I had on my leggings, a thicker short sleeve dri fit St. Jude Heroes shirt, my visor along with an ear band to go over it. I didn't bring my sunglasses even though the sun was shining, because I knew I wouldn't need it at the end of my run and they would just be bothering me. Though it hard to go south and west at the beginning of my run. The sun was low enough in the sky that the visor didn't help. I did bring 2 bottles with me (water & gatorade) however, I didn't really use it until mile 6 or so. And then it was only Gatorade. But I'm still glad I brought it, just in case. I just didn't want to disrupt my pace, I think is what I was going for. I also brought my snot rag but again, I didn't use it even though I needed to. It's hard to get it tucked back in my belt sometimes while running.

I mapped out my route today at work. I didn't have any problems crossing the main roads of Hillcrest, 1st or Lucinda towards NIU, surprisingly. I wanted to cross Lincoln Highway but I knew better than to do that. So I only managed 4 miles down there and then had to double back and make up the final mile on another part of the bike path. I wish there was a way to get over those roads though without having to stop or watch for cars, like an underpass. That would be awesome. Oh well.

This Morning

OK, so I didn't go running this morning after all. My alarm went off at the normal time for work but I just couldn't bring myself to get out of bed. I did turn on the heat after all last night, it was going to be 36 for a low.

So I did get up at quarter to 9a and decided to start eating. A bagel for one and then I added a bowl of oatmeal. After talking and hearing how much Jesse eats I decided to take his non-advice advice and eat some oatmeal too. Maybe that as well contributed to the EPIC FAIL of my 13 mile run last weekend. Hard to believe that it was only a week ago, it was 80* and very warm. So now I have another hour to wait before I can go running (food digestion) but I might head out early anyway.

And Brent is still asleep. Told ya. :-D

Tomorrow Morning

Boy, it's going to be cold tomorrow morning.
Temperature tonight will be 36 and then by 7a, it should be 39. 7a is the time that I had hoped to start running.
Looks like I have to break out my cold weather tights and my long sleeved shirt!
I HIGHLY doubt that Brent will be joining me tomorrow morning after all! HA!
Might have to swing by Starbucks on the way out to the trail to pick up my hot cocoa!

I have finally uploaded my email address book to St. Jude's fundraising website.
I hope to send out emails on Sunday night after Brent leaves.
I don't think I saved an email from last year when I sent them out, so not sure what I said.
It was just a template which made it very easy.
They switched to a new fundraising site this year. It seems to be not as cool or easy. It took FOREVER for the address book upload window to show up.
So if anyone has my email from last year, I would appreciate it if you could send it back to me! :-)

My snail mail letter has increased from 1/2 page to 1.5 pages now!
That's because I talked about last years race and stuff.
I'm hoping to send that out this week.
I must go to Office Max and have everything printed out since my printer doesn't work.
Unless I buy a printer online or something.

Now I'm just waiting for Brent to show up. Should be in another 30 minutes or so!
